What are containers? Think of a container as a lightweight package that includes your application code plus everything it needs to run—libraries, dependencies, runtime environments, and configurations. This package runs the same way on your developer’s laptop, in testing, and in production.

Before containers, teams struggled with “it works on my machine” problems. A feature would work perfectly in development but break in production because the environments were different. Different versions of libraries, different operating systems, different configurations. Containers solve this by packaging everything consistently.

Docker is the most popular tool for creating and running containers. When your team says “we’re containerizing this service,” they’re packaging it using Docker so it runs consistently everywhere. Docker became so dominant that “Docker” and “containers” are often used interchangeably, even though other container technologies exist.

It’s like treating your infrastructure the same way you treat your application code—version controlled, reviewable, testable, and reproducible.

The benefits for product teams:

Consistency. Every environment—development, staging, production—is created from the same code, eliminating configuration differences that cause “works in staging, broken in production” surprises.

Speed. Setting up a new environment takes minutes instead of days of manual clicking and configuration.

Documentation. The infrastructure code IS the documentation. Anyone can read it to understand how systems are configured. No more guessing or asking “who set this up?”

Disaster recovery. If something catastrophically breaks, you can rebuild the entire infrastructure quickly from code. This turns a potential multi-day crisis into a 30-minute rollback.

Experimentation. Engineers can safely spin up temporary test environments, experiment with new architectures, and tear them down without leaving abandoned infrastructure behind.

Why PMs need to know this: IaC impacts your team’s velocity and reliability. Teams using IaC can spin up test environments instantly, experiment with new features safely, and recover from failures faster. This means faster iteration cycles and more reliable products.

When technical discussions mention “Terraform” or “CloudFormation” or “provisioning infrastructure,” they’re talking about IaC. The key question for you: How does our infrastructure setup impact our ability to ship features and respond to customer needs?

How your team deploys code to production directly affects risk, downtime, and user experience. Understanding deployment strategies helps you make better decisions about release timing, risk management, and how to handle high-stakes launches.

There’s no one-size-fits-all deployment strategy. The right choice depends on your risk tolerance, infrastructure costs, and the nature of the change.

Blue-Green Deployment means running two identical production environments. One (blue) serves live traffic while the other (green) receives the new version. After thoroughly testing green, you switch all traffic at once. If something breaks immediately, you instantly switch back to blue.

Best for: Major releases where you want instant rollback capability, payment system changes, or features affecting core user workflows. The tradeoff is that you’re paying to run two full production environments simultaneously.

Risk profile: Low risk during rollout (instant switch), but the switch itself is a single point of failure.

Canary Deployment means releasing the new version to a small percentage of users first (the “canaries”—like canaries in coal mines, they detect problems). If everything looks good after a few hours, you gradually increase the percentage (5% → 25% → 50% → 100%) until everyone has the new version.

Observability goes deeper, letting you investigate why something happened even if you didn’t anticipate the problem. It answers “Why did the system behave this way?” You can dig into historical data, trace user requests, and understand the chain of events that led to a problem.

Think of it this way: Monitoring tells you your house is on fire. Observability helps you understand how it caught fire, what room it started in, and how to prevent it next time.

Logs record what happened in your application at specific moments—“User 12345 logged in,” “Payment processing failed with error code 503,” “Database connection pool exhausted.” Logs help you understand the sequence of events.

Traces show the complete journey of a single user request through your system—which services it touched, how long it spent in each, where it slowed down. Traces are invaluable for debugging performance issues in distributed systems.
